According to press accounts (including some in the foreign press), Papa Doug Manchester made a bid for the Boston Globe, but it came in too late for evaluation. Ergo, say these accounts, Manchester is not in the running. Apparently, the three finalists to buy the paper are the Taylor family, that owned the paper until selling it to the New York Times in the early 1990s; Boston Red Sox owner John Henry, and Robert Loring, a Massachusetts native who owns the Tampa Tribune. The bids apparently range from $65 million to $80 million. The Times bought it for $1.1 billion. That's quite a haircut.
