UC San Diego application spike sets record

Over 67,000 prospective freshmen apply for admission

Applications for incoming freshmen and prospective transfer students seeking admission to UC San Diego reached record numbers for the fall 2013 semester, the university announced last Friday.

A total of 67,392 prospective freshmen and another 14,948 transfer students submitted applications to the campus for the 2013-2014 school year, representing an increase of nearly 11 percent for new freshmen but a 1.5 percent drop in transfer applications.

Total campus enrollment for 2011, according to the latest statistics published on UCSD’s website, was 29,324, with just over 23,000 of those students enrolled in undergraduate studies.

“UC San Diego continues to attract many talented and well-qualified students from diverse ethnic, geographic and socioeconomic backgrounds,” Mae Brown, assistant vice chancellor of admissions and enrollment services, told the campus’ NewsCenter. “Our world-renowned faculty, dynamic students and vibrant campus community have contributed to the growth of UC San Diego stellar reputation as an academic powerhouse.”

While only about 8 percent of applicants reside within San Diego or Imperial Counties, at least another 57 percent come from other California locales including the Los Angeles and San Francisco regions.

According to the University’s suggested budget, California residents living on campus can expect to spend about $30,000 to attend this year. For out-of-state students, that cost climbs to nearly $53,000 due to an extra $22,878 in supplemental tuition that the UC system collects.
