A couple was charged with felony child endangerment, after police found a bag of meth hanging over their baby’s crib, according to testimony in court today.
When police went into a trailer home three weeks ago, they also found hypodermic syringes and hashish and the burnt stub of a marijuana cigarette, according to sworn testimony.
“It was a small, defunct trailer park,” said Escondido police Detective Christopher Zack. He said officers gathered in the 13000 block of Ivy Dell Lane, near Center City Parkway, the morning of January 3, 2013.
The detective said police intercepted David Lee Kautz, 44, driving away from the home. Police said they found 3 baggies of meth and a digital scale and a cell phone with incriminating text messages on it, when they searched Kautz and his vehicle.
Inside the trailer, Grace Sophia Cuenca, 32, was seated with her 8-month-old baby Elizabeth on her lap, according to police. Over the baby’s crib, police found a bag of methamphetamine dangling, the straps of the bag were looped over the handle of cabinets overhead, leaving the meth “within a few inches” of the edge of the crib, according to testimony.
Grace Sophia Cuenca and David Lee Kautz both told cops that they are the parents of the 8-month-old baby, according to testimony today.
The defense attorney for Grace Sophia Cuenca stated that her client only stayed at the drug-riddled trailer “occasionally,” and that Grace Sophia Cuenca actually lives in another part of Escondido with her husband and two other children.
Judge Robert Kearney ordered both defendants to face trial for felony child endangerment and possession of meth. Both defendants plead not guilty, and their next court date is set for March 8, in San Diego’s North County Superior Courthouse.
