The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced in a news release that San Diego's Whalen Manufacturing, dba Bayside Furnishings, has agreed to pay a $750,000 penalty. In 2007, Whalen learned that a 22-month old boy had died after the lid of a La Jolla model boat bed fell on the back of his head. The next year, Whalen and the CPSC announced a recall of the bed model. But, says the government, the company should have reported the information within 24 hours after obtaining information on the incident. In agreeing to the settlement, Whalen denied that the bed contained a defect that could create a hazard, and also denied that it did not report the CPSC in a timely fashion.
