The City of San Diego will indemnify Mayor Bob Filner for all or most of his costs in return for his resigning at the end of the month. The council approved the arrangement today (Aug. 23) by a 7-0 vote. (Two were absent.)
The City will indemnify Filner for costs of the Irene McCormack Jackson sex harassment case, paying his legal expenses as well as any possible damages. There could be settlements which the City would pick up. In short, the City will defend Filner. It will pay his expenses of outside lawyers up to $98,000.
If there are other suits beyond the Jackson case, the City reserves the right to consider not indemnifying the mayor, but that may be an empty threat.
Filner said he had loaded the gun but his enemies -- political and in the press -- had pulled the trigger. He said that he had never sexually harassed anyone, but said again he had mistreated women, and apologized for that.
