Hawaiian surfer Malia Manuel wins Oceanside championship

Female surfing pros dominated the waves in San Diego County this weekend

Female athletes slashed the surf over a three-day contest, with Hawaiian invader Malia Manuel taking the title of champion female surfer on Sunday, August 4, 2013.

The Ford Supergirl Pro competition is advertised as the largest all-women’s surf contest in the world by the producer of the event, ASP, the Association of Surfing Professionals.

Nineteen-year-old professional surfer Malia Manuel won $8,000 for her thrilling technique, and her competitors shared the rest of the $40,000 prize money.

Paige Hareb, 22, from New Zealand came in second. Alessa Quizon, 20, of Hawaii and Pauline Ado, 21, of France finished in a tie for third place.

The enthusiastic crowd on the beach in Oceanside California often rushed the female athletes as they left the water, and happy fans were rewarded with autographs and posed photos.

The competition started Friday August 2, with a field of 96 professional women surfers. After intensely competitive heats, the contests were narrowed on Sunday to head-to-head matches between finalists.

Knowledgable surfers remarked on Malia Manuel’s “powerful combinations” using both “her forehand and backhand,” and her ability to dominate each contest, leading in every round.

The runner-up, Paige Hareb from New Zealand, was considered an excellent final challenge for the Hawaiian dominator. Hareb wowed the crowds on the beach, but did not get the scores needed to best Manuel. Hareb also finished runner-up at last year’s Ford Supergirl Pro.

The winner, who was awarded a magenta supergirl cape, said, “It feels great to finally win!” Malia Manuel also remarked on the friendly crowd and said, “California is like a second home to me.”

This weekend’s contest is the second in a series of Supergirl Jams, which showcases more than 150 female professionals who compete in surf, skateboard and snowboard contests. The series will be edited into one broadcast on Fox Sports Net (FSN) set for Friday, November 1, 2013. Check your local television provider for showtimes.
