Police arrested two persons suspected of driving under the influence, during an overnight checkpoint in Oceanside last night.
More than three hundred drivers were contacted between 9:20 p.m. Friday night and 2:30 a.m. Saturday morning, August 3, 2013.
Police reported that they found three other drivers with suspended licenses, and fourteen more drivers with no licenses at all. The safety check was set up on Mission Avenue near Clementine Street.
Police issued 23 citations during the overnight effort.
“The deterrent effect of DUI checkpoints is a proven resource in reducing the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol or drug involved crashes,” police Sergeant Kenneth Gow stated in a press release this morning. “Research shows that crashes involving alcohol drop by an average of 20 percent when well-publicized checkpoints are conducted often enough.”
Persons who are caught driving under the influence can expect time in jail, and have their licenses suspended, and see their insurance costs go up, Sgt. Gow warned. The costs of mandatory DUI classes and fines and fees can exceed ten thousand dollars, according to the officer.
