Female surf competition in Oceanside this weekend

Lady surfer Sage Erickson of Ventura defends her win from last year

California surfer Sage Erickson is defending her champion title in Oceanside, from last year, against women from Hawaii and Japan and Argentina – in fact, competitors have come from all over the world.

Twenty-two-year-old Sage Erickson was not able to leave the water after her Saturday morning competition before she was mobbed by fans, on August 3, 2013. She obligingly signed surfboards and hats, and posed for photographs with young admirers. Then Erickson dropped off her board in the competitiors’ area before she walked to the nearby autograph tent to make herself available to well-wishers. There was a line of at least sixty persons waiting to meet and speak with the celebrity, who is from Ventura County.

The event this weekend is sanctioned by ASP, the Association of Surfing Professionals, which describes itself as “the governing body of professional surfing.” More than 90 professional competitors are participating in this weekend’s competition, declared to be the largest all-woman surf contest in the world.

The awesome ladies are shredding waves near Oceanside pier, in California, this Friday and Saturday and Sunday, finishing late the afternoon of August 4, 2013.

This weekend’s competition is the second in a series of Supergirl Jam events, which has more than 150 female pros who specialize in surfing and skateboarding and snowboarding.

This Ford Supergirl Pro event is free and open to the public. There are plenty of vantage points to watch the competitive surfing just south of Oceanside pier, and there is ample free (and pay) parking in the area.

The series of competitions will be edited into one show planned for broadcast on Fox Sports Net (FSN) on Friday November 1, 2013. Check your local provider for showtimes. You can get more information at www.supergirljam.com or www.asaentertainment.com
