With horses dying, Del Mar's political giving very much alive

Del Mar track money to California politicos is healthier than ever, disclosure shows

Whether horse racing is good for horses or not, one thing appears sure, it's great for political fundraisers.

A report in today's UT San Diego sheds new light on the long-smoldering controversy over horse fatalities at the state's racetracks.

Another report, this one filed yesterday by the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club with the California Secretary of State's office, shows how valuable the horse racing business has become to state politicos.

Though there are only a few big elections set for the immediate future, the club, which runs the Del Mar track, gave a total of $27,500 during just the first three months of this year to various members of the legislature and candidates for higher office.

$1500 went to Assembly Democrat Ben Hueso's state senate campaign, which he won handily last month.

But much of the cash went to campaigns scheduled for what the average voter might consider the relatively distant future.

Democratic Senator Mark Leno's 2018 lieutenant governor's campaign committee got $500, as did a host of other pending political bids, including Republican Assemblywoman Connie Conway for Senate 2018; Democratic Senator Rod Wright for Board of Equalization 2018; Democratic Assemblywoman Nancy Skinner for Senate 2016; Democratic Senator Bill Monning for Senate 2016; and Republican Assemblyman Curt Hagman for Senate 2016.
