Four men arrested after a home-invasion robbery attempt the afternoon of July 4 were sentenced this month, in San Diego’s North County Superior Courthouse.
Oceanside Police said two men forcibly entered a home on Bliss Circle the afternoon of July 4, and shoved an elderly woman who answered the door to the floor. The woman’s 28-year-old grandson was attacked with a screw driver, police said, but he reportedly had martial arts training and was able to fight off the men and chase them away.
The two attackers fled into a waiting truck occupied by two other men, according to a statement by police Lieutenant Leonard Mata. Oceanside police gave chase, and “the suspect vehicle lost control and crashed into an electrical box on Grapevine Street in Vista,” according to Lt. Mata. After a foot chase, all four men were taken into custody.
Thanh Hoai Ho, 38, and Phuong Bui, 37, both made plea deals in which they admitted burglary of an inhabited house and assault with force likely to cause great bodily injury on the elderly woman. Both were sentenced to 5 years state prison this month.
Andrew Phan Le, 24, pleaded guilty to a felony charge of aiding and harboring and concealing another after the other committed a crime. Police said he was the passenger waiting in the truck during the home-invasion. Le got a 4 year prison term when he was sentenced this month.
Hung Manh Tu, 40, was said to be the get-away driver, according to police. He pleaded guilty to possession of meth as a felony and was sentenced to time already served plus 3 years probation. Tu remains at liberty.
Prosecutor Patrick Espinoza negotiated the plea deals. All four men had benefit of a court-provided Vietnamese interpreter for their court appearances.
