The United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 135 PAC, based in San Diego, has just spent $25,000 on a radio advertising campaign to begin tomorrow and end November 6, according to a filing posted online today by the California Secretary of State's office.
The radio time, on stations owned by the Broadcast Company of the Americas, will be used to oppose Proposition 32, the measure on November's ballot that if passed by voters would ban payroll withholding of union dues for political causes.
As previously reported, Prop 32 is backed by R. B. "Buzz" Woolley Jr., founder and financial backer of San Diego's non-profit online news operation, the Voice of San Diego, who has given a total of $20,000 during this year and last to the campaign committee promoting the measure.
The San Diego Lincoln Club, a Republican group, kicked in $40,000 last year to help qualify the proposition.
In addition, Oceanside's Dan Hughes, CEO of Carlsbad's Coast Environmental, Inc., a Republican and self-styled Tea Party advocate who placed third in June's open primary race for the United States senate, has given $5,000.
Broadcast Company of the Americas runs sports station XEPRS AM, known as XX 1090; XHPRS FM, The Walrus; and XEPE AM, an ESPN sports outlet. All broadcast from Mexico.
