Grover Norquist's Americans for Tax Reform runs new anti-Peters ad

Grover Norquist, the anti-tax hero of the Tea Party, continues to pour money into the hotly contested race for the 52nd congressional district race between Scott Peters and Brian Bilbray.

Today, Norquist and his Americans for Tax Reform foundation announced the debut of a new ad bashing Peters. The 34-second tv spot, entitled "Typical Selfish Politician" has already appeared on some local television networks.

In all the group has spent more than $1.4 million in television ads attacking Peters.

"The second ad highlights Scott Peters' record of extreme mismanagement and reckless decisions," reads the post on Americans for Tax Reform's website. "Peters used his City Council vote to underfund the city pension system and to reward a city contract to a company that his wife was invested in."

The first tv buy started running on October 13 and attacked the former city councilmember and current port commissioner for his support of President Obama's health care law.

Americans for Tax Reform is not the only national political committee to get involved in the race. Since the primary, it has turned to one of the most closely watched congressional races in the country, prompting some national committees such as the House Majority PAC, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and the National Republican Congressional Committee to join the fray.

There are no signs that either candidate, or their supporters, plan to let up in the final week before the election.

A spokesperson for Peters fired back accusing Bilbray of kowtowing to the Tea-Party icon.

"Tea Party candidate Brian Bilbray made a pledge to Grover Norquist to never compromise and as a thank you, Norquist is giving $1.4 million to his campaign.

"The facts are that Mr. Bilbray is a millionaire who took multiple raises, takes two pensions, and a $174,000 salary all at taxpayer expense. [Peters] rejected pay raises for himself, turned back his car allowance and returned his salary at the City. And now, he returns his City pension to fund city libraries. Who is the selfish politician in this equation?

The voters are too smart to be fooled by Grover Norquist and his pal Brian Bilbray."
