Recent campaign disclosures show employee unions continue to toss thousands of dollars into San Diego's mayoral race.
As of October 17 the political committee, San Diegans for Retirement Security which is comprised of union powerhouses, American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) AFL-CIO and Affiliated Unions, has raised a total of $425,846 to elect Bob Filner and, as is equally important, to defeat Carl DeMaio and Proposition B.
The campaign disclosure lists Willie L. Pelote Sr. as the treasurer for the group. Pelote is the assistant director of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME)/ AFL-CIO.
A good chunk of the money raised by San Diegans for Retirement Security has gone towards paying union workers to canvass neighborhoods in hopes of gaining votes.
From October 1 through October 17, the Homecare Providers Union (UDW) was paid $46,165.68 to walk the neighborhoods for Bob Filner.
Judging by the expenditures, filed on October 18, the canvassers were tasked with two separate missions; one to oppose DeMaio and the other in support of Filner.
In all, the UDW received $30,187.50 on pro-Filner canvassing efforts and an additional $8,937.50 to rally against DeMaio and his plan to reform the pensions for city employees.
