Realtors and restaurateurs are San Diego GOP's latest big money players

As the day of the November election draws ever nearer, campaign cash continues to pile up at a record pace.

The latest big money players include the San Diego Association of Realtors IMPAC, which, according to a disclosure filing posted online by the county Registrar of Voters, yesterday gave $25,000 each to the San Diego Republican Party and its close ally, the GOP Lincoln Club.

Both have endorsed Republican City Councilman Carl DeMaio over Democratic congressman Bob Filner.

The San Diego Restaurant and Beverage Political Action Committee, sponsored by the California Restaurant Association has also become a major donor, having raised $150,810 this year through September 30.

$30,000 has been funneled to the local GOP so far, according to the group’s disclosure.

Major contributors to the PAC have included some of the city’s most famous eateries and food purveyors, including Bread & Cie, Inc. ($1,000); Brigantine Restaurant Corp. ($8,000); Bertrand at Mister A’s ($2,150); Cohn Restaurant Group Inc. ($5,300); Cowboy Star Restaurant & Butcher Shop ($1,300); and SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment, Inc. ($5,250).

Another big donor to the PAC was Diane Powers & Affiliated Entities, with $5,250. Back in 1971 Powers founded Old Town's Bazaar del Mundo with Dick Silberman, a millionaire Democrat who made much of his fortune with Jack in the Box, founded by Republican Robert O. Peterson.

Three decades later, Powers lost her lease on the lucrative establishment. She later claimed that ex-Democratic congresswoman Lynn Schenk, an aide to Gov. Gray Davis, was behind the move.

Schenk had been a close Silberman friend and ally until he married Republican Susan Golding and bankrolled Golding's bitter supervisor campaign against Schenk.

Golding was subsequently elected mayor. She divorced Slberman after he went to federal prison as a result of an FBI money laundering sting. After her eviction from the Bazaar, Powers created another shop and restaurant complex down the street.
