U.S Customs and Border Protection officers in Calexico, just southeast of El Centro in Imperial Valley, intercepted just shy of a half million dollars in cash that a 24 year-old San Bernardino resident was attempting to sneak across the border late last week.
The money was stuffed into 46 vacuum-sealed packages and was found by a “detector dog,” which alerted officers to the money concealed inside the gas tank of a 2009 Mazda 6 sedan.
“This seizure demonstrates the ongoing commitment of our officers to enforcing U.S. laws and stopping the flow of illegal proceeds and weapons from going into Mexico,” Port Director Billy Whitford said in a statement.
It is a federal offense to fail to declare the possession of more than $10,000 in currency when entering or leaving the United States.
