Sheriff’s deputies based out of the Encinitas patrol station were led on a pursuit from Solana Beach to Rancho Santa Fe on Wednesday afternoon after responding to a report of suspicious persons attempting to open various cars on the 700 block of San Mario Drive.
When they encountered the suspects driving a small SUV, a traffic stop was attempted. The suspects instead chose to flee. The driver lost control of his vehicle at the intersection of Via de la Valle and Las Colinas, crashing into a telephone pole guide wire. He then threw the SUV into reverse, slamming into the patrol car giving chase, before fleeing with the other suspects on foot. The deputy driving sustained minor injuries.
A short while later, 19 year-old Aaron Martinez of Escondido, the driver of the vehicle, was captured on foot and charged with vehicle burglary, possession of stolen property, possession of burglary tools, assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, felony failure to yield and felony resisting arrest.
Inside the vehicle Martinez was driving, authorities found burglary tools and items suspected to have been stolen in other incidents.
The other suspects remain at large. Detective Shawn Silva at the San Diego Sheriff’s Encinitas Station is conducting a follow-up investigation to identify the others involved and any potential victims of the group.
