Ever wonder just how much the City of San Diego spends to stock the shelves at its 36 libraries with magazines and newspapers? The answer: $346,000 each year.
On Tuesday, city councilmembers are expected to approve a two-year extension with EBSCO Subscription Services.
The yearly amount is up slightly, but only by approximately $5,000 a year.
If approved, it will be the third year that the City has hired EBSCO for subscription services.
At the end of the two-year extension, the City will have paid the company $1,717,428 for magazine and newspaper subscriptions in five-years time.
With the City's prediction of adding five new library branches as well as maintaining the amount it spends on magazines and newspapers, it appears as if the threats to the library departments may be over, at least until the next round of budget talks.
