Maintenance deferred

Water pipe ruptures in Balboa Park, flooding building that houses two museums and the San Diego History Center.

With just a few days remaining until Mayor Jerry Sanders leaves office, the lame duck mayor is still making waves. Unfortunately those waves can be found inside a building in Balboa Park after a water pipe ruptured last night.

Less than a week after City Auditor issued a report blasting the administration for not acting on the growing list of deferred maintenance projects, the crumbling infrastructure crumbled again, this time at 1649 El Prado, Balboa Park's main drag. The building houses the San Diego Model Railroad Museum, the Museum of Photographic Arts, and the San Diego History Center.

While the full extent of the damage is unknown, staff at one museum, expects to spend much of the day cleaning.

Ana Christina Penagos, communications director for the San Diego Model Railroad Museum, said no exhibits were damaged and the museum will be open today.

A representative from the San Diego History Center sent the following statement regarding the flood:

"San Diego History Center sustained water damage overnight. Building facility staff are diligently working to identify the cause and remediation crews are already in place. At present the History Center’s collections do not appear to have sustained damage though a complete investigation of the entire collection is underway.

The museum’s exhibit level is open for business though it is unknown at this time if the Research Library will be open for business this week.

Visitors looking to visit San Diego History Center’s Research Library are encouraged to check the museum’s web site: http://www.sandiegohistory.org

The San Diego Model Railroad Museum sustained only minor damage to its gift shop and there will be no interruption of business.

The Museum of Photographic Arts will be open as usual, Tuesday – Sunday."
