Another group of inmates has been transferred from Baja California prisons in order to help alleviate overcrowding, according to the secretary of the state prison systems, Jesús Héctor Grijalva Tapia. A total of 117 prisoners were taken from four different state prisons and transferred to Colonia Penal Federal de las Islas Marías.
Several high profile inmates were among those transferred, such as Trinidad Medina Pérez, who took part in 18 murders during 1998. The largest number of those transferred was from the Mexicali Cereso prison, which totaled 49.
The San Diego Reader reported in October that around 150 inmates were shipped from Baja California to another federal prison in order to help overcrowding.
Islas Marías is a federal prison which is located on an island in the Pacific Ocean off the Mexican state of Nayarit. The prison has been questioned for its alternative way of housing some inmates and also chastised for transferring inmates so far from their original homes.
