Imperial Beach Chase Bank Robbed for Second Time in Less Than a Month

For the second time in less than a month the Imperial Beach branch of Chase Bank at 1122 Palm Ave. was robbed. The first incident occurred at 11:15 a.m. Oct. 30, when a 6' Hispanic male wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt presented a demand note and claimed to have a weapon. The most recent robbery according to Lt. Marco Garmo of the San Diego Sheriff's Dept. occurred around 1:15 p.m Saturday Nov. 17 when a man carrying a red Verizon shopping bag approached a teller, pulled a small gray box with wires protruding from the bag and demanded cash. After the teller handed him an undetermined amount of cash, the man left the device on the counter and walked away. The bank was evacuated and the sheriff's Bomb/Arson Unit used a robot to retrieve the box and bring it outside for inspection. Deputies rendered it safe about 3:25 p.m. after determining that it did not contain any explosive material. The suspect was described by witnesses as 19 to 26 year old white man about 5 feet 8 or 5 feet 9 and weighing between 160 and 175 pounds with a medium build. He had acne on his face, brown and white wavy hair and possibly had hazel eyes. He was wearing a white, long-sleeved collared shirt and khaki pants. Anyone with information is asked to contact the FBI at (858) 565-1255 or to call Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
