Late GOP money includes $5,000 from San Diego TV station owner

It turns out that La Jolla hotel mogul and U-T San Diego owner Doug Manchester wasn't the only local media owner to back what turned out to be the largely forlorn cause of San Diego county Republicans this year.

According to a last minute disclosure filing by the party, dated yesterday and posted online late in the day by the California Secretary of State's office, Mike McKinnon, owner of KUSI, Channel 51, kicked in $5,000 on Monday, November 5, the day before the election.

In addition, Café Coyote gave $1,500 the same day. The Old Town restaurant is owned by onetime Navy Swift Boat captain Richard Goetz and his wife Lehn, daughter of former Democratic state Sen. Dede Alpert.

After her time in the legislature, Alpert went to work as an advisor for a Sacramento lobbying firm. Her husband, Mike Alpert, was a lawyer with Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher and used to be on the board of directors of the fast food Jack in the Box chain, where he served with Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown's wife Anne Gust.

Critics have accused McKinnon's TV station of having a conservative political bent, but defenders point out that his news operation has also showcased such left-of-center local personalities as former San Diego city attorney Mike Aguirre and ex-GOP Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher, who left his party and proclaimed himself an independent after he lost a battle for the GOP endorsement in the midst of a failed bid to become San Diego mayor earlier this year.
