The Progressive Kick political action committee wants the most liberal candidate to win the race for the 52nd Congressional District. The Oakland-based political action committee means to do so by shelling out major money on behalf of Lori Saldaña.
According to the latest disclosure report from the Federal Election Commission, the progressive political action committee spent $55,001.40 on cable-TV ads targeting the other Democrat in the race, former city councilmember and current port commissioner Scott Peters.
In the ad, currently running during The Daily Show and other cable programs, Peters is portrayed as an untrustworthy politician who is unwilling to protect Medicare and other entitlement programs.
"Scott Peters says he will protect Medicare and Social Security, but under the bright lights of a television station, it's 'Let's make a deal." The 30-second ad then shows a clip of Peters appearing on KUSI news. In the clip, Peters says that entitlement programs are all on the table when it comes to solving the national debt. "Everyone has to give up something and that's how you make a deal," said Peters.
So far, Saldaña is the only candidate in San Diego County to receive the support from Progressive Kick.
Over the past two years San Diego residents Lawrence and Suzanne Hess, owners of Lehbros Limited real estate firm have given a total of $130,000 to the liberal super PAC.
According to the executive director for Progressive Kick, Joshua Grossman, the committee's mission is clear.
"The only thing we are trying to do is work for clean air and clean jobs. We are not like other PACs. We have no axe to grind. We are trying to channel the energy from the 99 percent and get candidates in who will stick up for those values."
