Drunk driving arrests over the Memorial Day weekend are down from last year, the U-T San Diego is reporting, with the California Highway Patrol reporting 58 total DUI arrests through early Monday morning, as compared to 75 for the same period last year.
An increased focus on “DUI/Driver License Checkpoints” over the weekend by local law enforcement appears to have contributed little to the arrest totals.
Results made available so far from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department on three such checkpoints in San Marcos, Lemon Grove, and unincorporated El Cajon indicate that 3,680 vehicles passed through the three checkpoints, with 1,869 drivers being stopped. Of those, 16 were given field sobriety tests, and three were ultimately arrested on suspicion of DUI.
Twenty-two vehicles were impounded and 62 citations were issued, most due to issues unrelated to drunken driving. The Lemon Grove checkpoint yielded 12 impounds, though there were no arrests made at the site for impaired driving.
