Former San Diego State University athletic director Jeff Schemmel, who in November 2009 left Aztec Mesa in ignominy after it was revealed that he'd used school funds to visit an alleged mistress in Alabama, is currently at work finding a new men's basketball coach for Colorado State University.
According to an account posted yesterday by Colorado.Com, website of the Fort Collins Coloradoan, CSU has hired San Diego's JMI Sports to assist Colorado athletic director Jack Graham in his coach hunting.
"Former San Diego State athletic director Jeff Schemmel, who heads up the college division of JMI Sports, will work directly with Graham in the hiring process," the account says, adding, "Schemmel is the brother of Colorado Rockies radio broadcaster and former CSU play-by-play voice Jerry Schemmel."
Jeff Schemmel was forced from his SDSU job after a woman testified in a divorce case deposition that she had trysted with him in the Southern state.
Upon the athletic director's departure, then-SDSU president Steve Weber said Schemmel had "disappointed the university" by his activities, including his "improper use of state funds."
Weber added that the departing athletic director's "pattern of judgments and actions...ultimately put us in a place where Jeff could no longer fruitfully serve this university and department."
Schemmel responded with a statement saying in part, "My decision to resign was agonizing, and based solely on concern for my wife and my family and the continued public scrutiny of our private lives."
He left after the university paid him $116,000 and forgave a $20,000 mortgage payment.
Less than two years later, Schemmel signed up with JMI Sports, a consulting and marketing firm founded by billionaire Padres owner John Moores.
Colorado's Graham would not tell the paper how much JMI is being paid for its work.
"Graham wouldn't divulge details of the contract between JMI and CSU, calling it 'confidential','' according to the Colorado story.
"He said it's being paid out of private funds through the CSU Research Foundation and not by the university itself."
As of last fall, JMI Sports's biggest local client was the University of San Diego, which is planning to develop a posh new baseball stadium on campus.
“The renovation will completely overhaul the existing facility and provide amenities comparable to top Minor League Baseball parks including an iconic entry, private suites, a press box, a kid’s play area, and open terraces with the design flexibility to host special events," said a post on JMI's website.
"In addition to providing a distinct competitive advantage to the University’s baseball team, this dynamic facility will strengthen connections with the neighboring community, providing the school and its many alumni and supporters with a top tier venue that pays homage to the unique and treasured aesthetic of the campus.”
