Democratic State Senator Juan Vargas, a candidate for Congress to replace 51st District incumbent Democrat Bob Filner, has continued to collect money in two of his California legislative campaign accounts, disclosure reports posted online yesterday by the state Secretary of State show.
From the first of this year through March 17, "Juan Vargas for Senate 2014" raised a total of $5,200 from two entitites having an ongoing interest in state legislative business, Blue Shield of California ($3200 on January 11) and the California Construction and Industrial Materials Association PAC ($2000 on March 12).
The same amounts were subsequently transferred by the Vargas fund on March 16 to the "Andrew Lachman for California Assembly 2012" committee ($2000) and the "2008 [Joe] Simitian Senate Officeholder Account" ($3200), the report says.
Other expenses included $271 for a "legislative meeting" for four, including Vargas, on January 30 at the Wine Spectator in the Napa Valley town of St. Helena.
The fund ended the period with a cash balance of $44,029.
Vargas endorsed fellow attorney and ex-senate Democratic staffer Lachman, running for the 46th District Assembly seat in the San Fernando Valley, earlier this week.
Simitian and Vargas authored Senate Bill 226 last year to "streamline" the state's environmental quality act, according to an online post by Gary Toebben, CEO of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, which backed the measure.
In addition to the money gathered by his 2014 reelection committee, Vargas also picked up $17,500 for his "Juan Vargas for Senate 2010" committee.
That fund reported making payments of $17,563, and had remaining outstanding debts of $360,585 at the end of the March 17 reporting period, much of which was owed to various Vargas campaign workers.
As of March 17, the 2010 committee had a cash balance of $4,644.
Donors included the Peace Officers Research Association of California PAC ($1,000 on March 5); the Miami, Florida law firm of Greenberg Traurig ($1,000 on March 13); Berry Petroleum of Denver, Colorado ($1000 on January 31); the Associationn of California Life & Health Insurance Companies PAC ($1000 on March 5); and the California Cattlemen's Association PAC (Cattle-PAC) ($1500 on February 21).
Payments by the 2010 account included $4000 to Encino political consultant Shallman Communications, which was still owed $121,000.00 at the end of the period.
