Journalists in Tijuana continue to report on crime, despite routine threats made against them. An online comment earlier this week threatened to dismember journalists from the Diez4 monthly magazine. Employees at Diez4 said they would not discontinue their coverage of criminal activities in the region.
A law approved earlier this month was created in hopes of protecting Mexican journalists. The law would make all crimes against media workers a federal crime. The crimes would then be investigated by the central government’s attorney general, and not local officials. The law will now have to be approved by 17 of 31 state legislatures.
New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists states 51 journalists have been killed in Mexico from 2000 to 2011. Mexico’s national human rights commission reports a higher number, 74 for the same time period. The vast majority of these crimes go unprosecuted.
A film documenting the risks encountered by the staff of Zeta weekly newspaper will be screened this weekend. Reportero will screen at the San Diego Latino Film Festival March 18th, at 3:00 pm.
