A new poll from Competitive Edge Research indicates that Carl DeMaio and Bob Filner are headed for a runoff in the San Diego mayoral race.
A sampling of 603 voters contacted between March 1 and 4 showed DeMaio in the lead with 25% of the vote, followed by Filner at 20% and other Republican candidates Nathan Fletcher and Bonnie Dumanis polling at 11% each. The poll had a 4% margin of error.
DeMaio compares especially well among voters who describe themselves as “very conservative,” garnering 52% support. Filner, who is rated as a “far left leader” by the website govtrack.us, gets 12% support from this group. Conversely, “very liberal” voters go for Filner over DeMaio, 39% to 6%; “moderate” voters largely say their June primary vote is still up for grabs, with 41% of self-proclaimed centrists still undecided.
“Carl DeMaio's track record of advocating for taxpayer-centered reforms in San Diego is unmatched by any other candidate in this race, which is why the elected members of the Republican Party of San Diego County recently voted by a more than 2/3 majority to endorse his candidacy for mayor,” says Tony Krvaric, chair of the Republican Party of San Diego County, which has endorsed DeMaio.
While Competitive Edge has been retained by the DeMaio mayoral campaign, the group says its findings come from a poll commissioned by an unnamed third party.
