Blaine Avenue, a rather insignificant side street in Hillcrest, may become much more meaningful -- that is, if a proposal to change the name of the street to Harvey Milk Way is approved by city councilmembers.
The first stop for the proposal from San Diego Pride occurs tomorrow at the monthly meeting of the Uptown Planners. There, planning group members will discuss the proposal to rename the narrow side-street, which runs for a four-block span from Cleveland Avenue to Centre Street near the entrance to the LGBT community center.
According to a letter from Dwayne Crenshaw, Executive Director of San Diego LGBT Pride, the street was chosen because of it's proximity to San Diego's "largest LGBT populations concentration" in Hillcrest.
"We believe it would be a great service to the community to recognize Harvey Milk for his leadership in the movement for freedom, equality, and inclusion for the LGBT community in the same way we honor other prominent civil rights leaders," wrote Crenshaw.
The street would become the first in the country to be named after the LGBT civil rights leader.
The proposal is in preliminary stages and will need approval from the city council before the name change is finalized.
