El Cajon Police Shoot Knife-Wielding Man

A 21 year-old El Cajon man was taken into custody after being shot in the arm by an El Cajon Police Department sergeant earlier today. Police report the individual's wounds were not life-threatening.

Police began receiving calls shortly after 9:00 a.m. concerning a suspicious person near the intersection of Villa Crest and Pepperhill Drive whom residents feared might be casing the neighborhood in anticipation of a future robbery.

Responding to the call, the unnamed sergeant, said to be an 11 year veteran of the force, located Andrew Luna, who matched the description of the suspect.

Luna was apparently walking through the neighborhood, armed with a knife in each hand. He initially ignored the officer's command to drop the weapons and began to walk away. After repeated demands by the officer, Luna turned, raised one of the knives "in a threatening manner," and advanced on the officer. At this point, the sergeant fired once, striking Luna's left arm.

The suspect was taken into custody, with both knives and other unidentified evidence being taken into custody, police report. Luna was placed under arrest for assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer.
