10 girls, from the ages of 13 to 17, were rescued from a sex trafficking ring in Tijuana last week. State police arrested five men on June 19th who ran the operation.
Five of the victims gave statements regarding how men paid anywhere from the equivalent of $15 to $100 USD to have sex with them. The victims stated they had been in forced prostitution for over a year, and that many others were in the same conditions in Tijuana.
The girls were transported to hotels in the colonia Manuel Paredes, and other various parts of the city to meet clients.
The suspects, Jorge González Hurtado, alías “El Güero”, José Ángel Hurtado Claudio, Héctor Manuel Tapia Gallegos, Jesús Alberto Avalos Ochoa, and Fernando Tapia Cortez, were presented to the media before being transferred to a detention facility.
Young women from other parts of Mexico are often promised work in border cities, and then forced into prostitution. The victims are often moved from one city to another to work in brothels and on the streets.
