DeMaio Hires Former Democratic Chair As Campaign Consultant

If nothing else, this election's mayoral race has been interesting to watch. First Nathan Fletcher jumps ship on the GOP and now Carl DeMaio announces that the former chair for the County's Democratic Party has joined his campaign team.

Today, in a blast email, DeMaio released word that Art Castañares, long time Democratic consultant has signed on to help with strategy and outreach for the campaign.

"I believe Carl DeMaio is the right person to be San Diego's next Mayor," stated Castañares. "While there are things Carl and I see differently, Carl has the right leadership abilities and vision for the future of San Diego. Every San Diegan wants a City government that provides the important services we deserve and a thriving local economy. I look forward to helping Carl deliver that message to communities throughout San Diego who may not have heard his message before."

In a city that is leaning more and more to the left and where voter registration favors Democrats, the staunch conservative candidate hopes to convince unregistered voters that he can work with anyone."My Administration will reflect all San Diegans - regardless of party affiliation, community or socio-economic background," said DeMaio. "That's why I'm thrilled to be working with Art on this campaign. He is a talented and dedicated civic leader who cares deeply about the future of our city and his support and advice will be invaluable to our team."

Castañares has had a long history in San Diego County and Sacramento, you can tell by the number of links below...

Also, here's a response from current chair of the San Diego Democratic Party, Jess Durfee:

*"“Art Castañares hasn’t been involved with the County Democratic Party for more than a decade, and the last high-profile candidate he worked for as a consultant is a Republican, so I’m not surprised that he signed on to work for a well-financed Republican campaign.

“However, I am surprised that Carl DeMaio is promoting his connection to a downtown lobbyist with an ethically dubious track record. From Art’s ethics breaches to his legal entanglements, he doesn’t exactly embody the ‘reform’ that the DeMaio campaign has been promising. If this is the kind of advisor Carl wants in the mayoral race or potentially in City Hall, I think voters have cause for concern.”
