San Diego County's unemployment rate was 9.2% in June, up from a revised 8.8% in May, but below the year-ago rate of 10.4%, according to the California Employment Development Department. Nonfarm employment rose in the area,however, by 13,400 jobs. Leisure and hospitality recorded the biggest gain between May and June, up 7,200 jobs. This is greatly seasonal. Construction jobs rose 2,600 in the month. Government jobs were down 700. The unemployment rate can often rise even as the number of jobs increases, because more people look for jobs, thus raising the number in the workforce.
