Reptile lovers had a weekend of scaly fun at the Civic Center in downtown San Diego, June 30 and July 1.
Advertised as a “Reptile Super Show,” there was such a good turnout it was elbow-to-elbow for the two-legged mammals who paid $12 each at the door.
Ten-year-old Francesca shared her pet tortoise named “Tank” with passersby. She was helping her dad, Dan Fanolla of Poway, an exhibitor at the show who builds custom living enclosures for pets.
Six-year-old Chance came to the show with his dad and mom and sister from Paradise Valley. The boy got two snakes to go in a plastic container. His dad Andrei Trillana paid $400 and $300 for the different colored “ball” pythons, which he said “was a good price.”
Fearless moms were the norm in the packed hall this weekend. Sarah Harwick, 25, was glad to show off the $450 “bumble bee python” she had just acquired for a “family pet.” Husband Evan and 1-year-old son Wyatt drove with mom from Banning on Sunday morning to acquire their new prize. “This is my tenth snake,” Sarah said happily.
Besides snakes and lizards and turtles, other creeping things available at the show included spiders and insects and rodents.
Teresa Vasquez bought a tarantula for $15 and said it was her third hairy arachnid pet. Eleven-year-old Evian handled the large spider with his mom.
