Poway city officials will consider closing the door for those hoping to open pot shops in the City at a city council hearing tomorrow. At the meeting, city councilmembers and the mayor will listen to public input before reading an ordinance that will place a permanent moratorium on dispensaries and collectives.
The ban is not new to the City. In July 2011, the council enacted an interim moratorium to give city officials time to examine whether dispensaries placed an unfair strain on law enforcement and residents. One month later, the council extended that ordinance and tomorrow they hope to do so for good.
According to the staff report, medical marijuana dispensaries "have significant negative effects on maintaining the health, safety, and welfare of the City's neighborhoods...it is apparent that dispensaries allowed in other communities have frequently attracted criminal conduct, including burglaries and robberies, solicited the sales of non-medical marijuana and other illegal drugs, and other secondary impacts."
The hearing begins at 7pm.
