Imperial Beach city councilmember Lori Bragg requests the council discuss a proposal to display the motto, "In God We Trust" inside council chambers. On January 18, the council will decide whether they should consider it.
Bakersfield councilwoman Jacquie Sullivan, president and founder of advocacy group, "In God We Trust --America Inc.", is leading a charge to display the motto in all city council chambers and state capitols across the country. On November 29, Sullivan sent an email to the Imperial Beach City Council, among others, requesting that Imperial Beach join the 264 cities and counties that have agreed.
"On November 1, 2011, the House of Representatives voted 396-9 to reaffirm "In God We Trust" as the nation's motto," reads Sullivan's email to city concilmembers.
"Officially designated as such in 1956 by the 84th Congress and President Eisenhower, Representative Randy Forbes of Virginia authored the bill because such notables as President Obama mistakenly state, "E Pluribus Unum" is the national motto."
Imperial Beach city council will hear the item at 6pm.
