GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum, locked in a tight race with part-time La Jolla resident Mitt Romney in tomorrow's Michigan primary, has picked up some sizable support from El Cajon self-storage magnate Terrence R. Caster.
Caster, an original backer of Proposition 8, the controversial California measure banning same-sex marriages that is currently being litigated in federal court, gave $50,000 on January 8 to Alexandria, Virginia-based Red White and Blue Fund, an independent super PAC backing Santorum's presidential bid.
Despite his conservative reputation, Caster and wife Barbara have in the past backed at least one local Democrat, giving a total of $500 to San Diego city councilwoman Marti Emerald on March 25, 2009.
Their son Brian, listed as CEO of Caster properties, gave Emerald's campaign $270 on the same date.
More recently, according to city filings, Brian and wife Denise gave a total of $1,000 in December of last year to Republican Carl DeMaio's bid for San Diego mayor.
Also in 2011, Brian gave $10,000 to Reforming City Hall with Carl DeMaio, another committee controlled by the GOP city councilman.
On September 21, 2010, Barbara and Brian gave a total of $2000 to the campaign committee of Republican Lorie Zapf, elected to the San Diego city council that year.
