UC San Diego has released the names of five alumni and supporters of the university to be honored at its annual Alumni Celebration on June 2 as part of its Alumni Weekend from Mary 31 through June 3.
Dr. William A. Lee of Gilead Sciences, the world’s second-largest research-based biopharmaceutical company, will receive an Outstanding Alumnus award. Lee is credited as co-inventor of Roche’s Cellcept, a drug for patients receiving kidney, heart, or liver transplants, as well as several other patented drugs. He has also led the company in research pertaining to HIV.
Jan Tuttleman is to be honored with a Distinguished Leadership award. Tuttleman, according to the university, “has been an angel investor in early stage life science companies in San Diego.” She also serves on the Dean’s Advisory Council to UCSD’s Rady School of Management. She led an effort to raise $250,000 as part of Rady’s 2006 Class Campaign, and has continued to donate to the university since graduation.
Albert Yu-Min Lin will receive recognition via an Emerging Leader award. A research scientist at the university’s division of the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology, Lin is also “an Emerging Explorer of the National Geographic Society in the field of technology-enabled exploration.” He is part of a team participating in “The Search for Genghis Khan,” which has conducted several expeditions to Mongolia. They believe their efforts may have pinpointed Khan’s final resting place.
Darcy and Robert Bingham will also be named Honorary Alumni for their philanthropic work. The couple founded the Darcy and Robert Bingham Endowed Scholarship, supporting UCSD undergraduate students who maintain employment while attending school. A self-described “philanthropreneur,” Darcy was an organizer of the first Chancellor’s Challenge 5K Run/Walk for Scholars, an annual event that’s raised over $2 million since its inception, funding more than 800 scholarships over 14 years.
