Statistics recently released by the Centro de Investigación y Capacitación Propuesta Cívica, which allegedly reflect official statistics by the Mexico attorney general’s office, have revealed the massive number of disappeared persons in Mexico over the last 6 years. According to the report, 20,815 people have disappeared during President Felipe Calderon’s time in office.
Statistics were broken down in several categories, including gender, age, and state. According to the report, Baja California had a total of 15 people who have disappeared since 2006. While the number may seem positive, it is highly inaccurate.
In 2009, Santiago Meza Lopez admitted to dissolving over 300 bodies in acid for Teodoro Garcia Simental, a cartel leader in Baja California. While not all of those killed and dissolved had been reported, clearly more than 15 had.
The San Diego Reader reported, on November 28th, that a federal team would begin searching for those missing in a specific area of Tijuana. On December 1st, the UT-San Diego reported the remains of an estimated 100 people had been found by the team.
