New Peters chief of staff from Pennsylvania

Democratic congressman-elect hires chief of staff of Pennsylvania congressman defeated in April primary

Ex-San Diego city councilman Scott Peters, who narrowly beat out G.O.P. incumbent Brian Bilbray for California's newly formed 52nd district, has hired his chief of staff from the office of a Democrat who lost his own redrawn district primary race earlier this year.

Peters pick Michelle M. Dorothy is currently chief of staff for Jason Altmire of Pennsylvania. Elected to congress in 2006, Altmire saw his district eliminated in 2012 and was forced into a 12th district primary with fellow Democratic incumbent Mark Critz. After narrowly beating Altmire, Critz went on to lose to Altmire's 2010 Republican opponent.

According to data posted online by Legistorm.com, Dorothy became Altmire's chief of staff in May of this year, following the congressman's primary defeat, after serving as acting chief from December of last year. Before that she was Altmire's district director.

During the five-month period from May until the end of September, according to the website's numbers, Dorothy was paid $48,750, or $9750 a month.

According to the Peters release, “Before her work as a congressional aide, she spent 10 years in the private sector in the telecommunications and software industries where she was responsible for the design and implementation of marketing strategies for multi-million dollar product portfolios.

“Originally from Fort Wayne, Indiana, Dorothy has a Bachelor of Arts from Indiana University, as well as two master’s degrees: one in business administration and one in public and international affairs, both from the University of Pittsburgh.”

In addition to his top pick, Peters also announced that MaryAnne Pintar, a onetime aide to GOP mayor Susan Golding and communications director for the Peters congressional campaign, would be his district director. Pintar was also chief of staff in the Peters city council office.
