San Diego and soft money: County residents donate more than $4 million to Obama and Romney Super PACs

Doug Manchester isn't the only resident of San Diego County digging deep into their pocket book in support of Mitt Romney. Dozens of other wealthy residents in the area are doing the same, at times making donations for $100,000 to the political action committees that support Romney's run for President.

More than 140 residents of San Diego County have written $1,000 checks or greater to Romney-backed committees. The donations to Romney Victory Inc. and Restore Our Future totals $2,379,414.

Appearing on the list of large Romney backers are some familiar names in San Diego including weight-loss mogul Jenny Craig who gave the Romney Victory Inc. $50,000, CEO of Bridgepoint Education Andrew Clark and his wife Catherine who donated a total of $102,500 to the same fund, mega-developer Douglas Barnhart who gave $100,000, and of course U-T San Diego CEO Doug Manchester who pitched in more than $113,816.

Then there's Romney's own sons Matthew and Craig who listed San Diego as their residence; together they gave their dad's political action committees $20,000, and Romney's buddy and fellow Mormon parishioner Jonathan Bullen and his wife gave $100,000.

One donor, Verna Harrah, wife of casino magnate Bill Harrah and former San Diego resident, gave $50,000 to Romney Victory Inc. just five weeks before she passed away.

Other notable contributors include:

Jan Goldsmith's campaign committee-- $25,000

John and Eleanor Barbey -- $100,000

Malin and Roberta Burnham -- $10,000

Conrad Prebys -- $10,000

Kelly and Laurie Burt -- Price Self Storage- $100,000

James and Rebecca Davies -- Ann Romney's brother -- $25,000

Charles Dunn -- $50,000

Kim Fletcher and Investors Leasing Corporation -- $105,000

And while just under 140 people in the county have given massive amounts of money to Romney Super PACs, only a handful of people have contributed more than $1,000 to political action committees in support of the President.

If it wasn't for one donor in particular, the Priorities USA Action bundlers would most likely consider San Diego County a lost cause. That big-time donor was none other than Qualcomm founder and former CEO Irwin Jacobs. Jacobs wrote a check to Priorities USA Action for $2 million dollars on June 11 of this year.

The other four donors to Obama's Super PAC who gave more than $1,000 are:

Janine Marks -- $2,000 Sandra Mollenaur -- $2,050 William Pickens -- $1,500 Mel Shapiro -- $3,250
