San Diego State University was the beneficiary of $71.5 million in private donations in the fiscal year ending June 30, the college’s NewsCenter reported earlier this week.
“This has been an extraordinary year in The Campaign for SDSU,” university president Elliot Hirshman told NewsCenter. “The generous support of our alumni and community members is moving our educational, research and community service programs forward at a critical time in the life of our university.”
The “Campaign for SDSU” program has raised $330 million toward its overall goal of $500 million by 2014. Funds go toward providing scholarships for study both locally and abroad, engaging the San Diego community by “building academic programs to prepare for the region’s future,” and attracting top-notch faculty to the university.
Private donor funding has gained importance, the university says, as state monies have dried up. SDSU has seen its state funding reduced in recent years from $221 million in 2007-2008 to $103 million today.
