Proposed legislation from state Assembly member Ben Hueso regarding the establishment of renewable energy “infrastructure financing districts” is drawing fire from the Protect Our Communities Foundation, a group “dedicated to protecting San Diego County backcountry from ill-conceived energy development and promoting smart energy solutions for the region.”
Hueso’s Assembly Bill 2551, according to Around The Capitol, “would authorize a legislative body to establish an infrastructure financing district in a renewable energy zone area, as defined, for the purpose of promoting renewable energy projects.” It would further exempt the formation of such districts from the current requirement that 2/3 of registered voters within a proposed district give their consent.
Protect Our Communities likens the districts to “redevelopment agencies run by non-government non-profits,” which have drawn considerable criticism in recent months.
In a letter sent to state Senator Christine Kehoe and others urging them not to support the bill, Protect our Communities board member Bill Powers outlines additional reasons to block its passage.
