A fire broke out at San Onofre Nuclear Generating Stations’ Unit 2 reactor this afternoon, the North County Times is reporting.
The fire, which started at an electrical panel in an area where non-radioactive steam spins turbines that generate electricity, burned for about 40 minutes and was “easily extinguished,” according to Jennifer Manfre, a spokeswoman for plant operator Southern California Edison.
No workers were injured in the fire. Unit 2 was shut down on January 9 for maintenance, and has remained out of commission since, as a radioactive leak at the neighboring Unit 3 reactor has prompted the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to call for further investigation of tubing in the steam generators that has shown signs of premature wear at both reactors.
