The San Diego County Democratic Party last night announced endorsements for the mayoral race and city council seats in San Diego. Although these positions are officially non-partisan in nature due to California state law, it’s common for candidates to openly associate with one of the major political parties.
Such is the case for Bob Filner, the Democrat abandoning his seat in the House of Representatives to run for mayor. Not surprisingly, he gets the endorsement nod from the local branch of his party.
Other official endorsements include current council members Sherri Lightner for council District 1, Todd Gloria for District 3, and Marti Emerald for District 9. Again, all have previously affirmed their allegiance to the Democratic party.
Challengers in the other two races to get the party’s backing include D. Todd Philips, who will take on Mark Kersey; and Richard Carlson in the fight over the District 5 seat being vacated by Carl DeMaio so he can run for mayor. Mathew Kostrinsky is the Democrats’ choice to go against Rikard F. Hauptfeld and Scott Sherman in District 7. This seat is currently held by Emerald, but district realignment and the addition of a ninth councilmember moves her to the newly created District 9.
