El Cajon Police last night arrested a 45 year-old transient who’s being accused of robbery and assaulting a police officer.
Around 9:30 p.m., a security guard attempted to confront Richard Nevett, who was leaving a Fresh & Easy grocery store on North 2nd Street without paying for some items. Nevett then “brandished several metal pipes and aggressively swung them repeatedly at the security guard,” before fleeing with the stolen merchandise, according to a report issued by police.
Near midnight, officers responded to a complaint about an intoxicated man causing a disturbance on the 200 block of Jamacha Road, within a short distance of the Fresh & Easy. Officer Ben Hogan encountered Nevett, still in possession of the stolen goods, who immediately fled.
Hogan gave chase, and Nevett turned to confront him, wielding a metal pipe and a knife. After being ordered repeatedly to drop his weapons, Nevett did so and again ran. When Hogan caught up to him, Nevett again turned to fight, at which point he was Tasered by Hogan, to little effect.
Eventually Nevett tripped and fell in a parking lot on East Main Street, where two passers-by assisted Hogan in subduing the suspect. The police are thanking the unnamed good Samaritans for their help.
