San Diego Police are reporting a considerably higher than usual rate of success with a pair of local DUI checkpoints set up over the weekend. One of the strongest contributing factors were the choice of checkpoint locations: the 2600 block of Ingraham Street and the 2400 block of Grand Avenue, two popular exit points from the busy Pacific Beach bar district.
870 vehicles passed through the checkpoint controlled by police on Ingraham, with 19 intoxicated driving arrests made and 20 vehicles impounded. One female driver refused to stop and attempted to drive through the checkpoint — a spike strip placed in the road disabled her car, after which she was also arrested for DUI.
At the Grand Avenue checkpoint, sheriff’s deputies directed a multiagency operation as part of the state’s AVOID program, making 26 DUI arrests and impounding 42 vehicles. Another 6 arrests were made by roving patrols not directly tied to the checkpoints, for a total of 51 arrested during the course of the evening.
By comparison, a checkpoint conducted by sheriff's deputies in Solana Beach on September 3, the same day as the Pacific Beach operation, netted only four arrests. Deputies there counted 582 vehicles through the checkpoint between 7:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m.
In another operation staged in Poway in July, authorities impounded eight vehicles but did not encounter a single drunk driver.
