Tijuana's Adela Navarro Bello wins 2011 Courage in Journalism Prize

Adela Navarro Bello, a Tijuana journalist who has risked death by covering the ongoing drug war and corruption of government officials there, has won a 2011 Courage in Journalism Award from the International Women's Media Foundation.

A key subject for Navarro Bello, general director of Zeta news magazine, has been ex-Tijuana mayor Jorge Hank Rhon, who has said he will run again for the governorship of Baja California.

She has repeatedly called for reopening the case of slain Zeta editor, Héctor "El Gato" Félix Miranda.

"I’ve been poisoned with the truth. I can’t stop," she has said.  “We aren’t afraid to write about the drug cartels and run the names of people who are hurting our society. We tell the police who they are. That’s the kind of journalism we do. We go everywhere and cover everything. We won’t remain silent.”

Our Bill Manson profiled Navarro Bello and her dangerous profession back in September, 1999.
