"Endorse us now. Endorse us now. Endorse us now," was the chant from members of Occupy San Diego just before city council president Tony Young suddenly adjourned the city council's Tuesday morning session.
The occupiers were there to speak during public comment about the council's unwillingness to endorse the Occupy San Diego movement. And while more than 40 people crowded council chambers looking for an opportunity to speak on the issue, Council President Young informed the group that city council bylaws only allowed three minutes of public comment per issue.
In response, Michelle "Jersey" Deutsch approached the microphone to speak for the group, or rather to lead the group in a public chant.
"Our right to protest has been discouraged by the City," Deutsch told councilmembers.
The occupy activist then led a group of about 50 people in a chant asking for council to support their movement.
"Please endorse our peaceful protest action," Deutsch said before the crowd repeated the line.
"We asked you to place this item on the agenda at the last meeting. You did not so we ask you again."
"If you do not place this item on the agenda. We will accept this as consent to our protest."
After the comments, council president Young asked the next speaker to come to the microphone. The crowd wasn't pleased.
"I understand the passion here but you are interrupting the public process," said Young before the crowd began to chant.
