On Monday, board members for the Sweetwater Union High School District will consider banning synthetic drugs Spice and Bath Salts at South Bay campuses.
District superintendent Ed Brand introduced the proposal to ban the synthetic drugs. The drugs are said to be a more potent chemical blend of both marijuana and cocaine with long-lasting side effects such as seizures, hallucinations, and other symptoms.
Last week, governor Jerry Brown signed a bill that makes the sale and distribution of synthetic drugs illegal.
In a statement, Chula Vista councilmember Steve Castaneda applauded the proposed ban.
“Spice and products like it are legally marketed to all age groups as natural incense,” said Castaneda. “They think if they put 'not for human consumption”'on the label they’ve eliminated their social responsibility to protect consumers from this menace,” he continued.
The meeting will be held inside the Sweetwater Administration Center at 6pm
