Signs — the Message of the Occupiers

A crowd that police estimated at in excess of 1400 gathered downtown yesterday afternoon, October 7, to march from Children's Park to the Civic Center and back again, with hundreds remaining through the first night of Occupy San Diego. While the movement collectively focuses on corporate practices that damage "the 99%" of Americans, including the heavy presence of business funding of political campaigns, the people drawn to it have a diverse range of takes on the situation and a variety of other complaints with their government that they're using Occupy to air. Following are some of those messages occupiers have chosen to share through their picket signs.

The Reader's Chad Deal is on site at Occupy and providing ongoing and more in-depth coverage, with updates as news happens. Today the group again marches on the Civic Center, with the intention to begin a long-term occupation of the plaza.

Messages from the occupiers:

"The ones who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do."

"99% fed up because the 1% F up."

"Successful businessman and employer seeks same opportunity for next generation."

"I don't need sex, the government f***s me enough!"

"Blessed are the young, for they will inherit the national debt."

"Corporations are afraid because they know we are not."

"Profits = Wall Street heroin"

"If only the war on poverty was a real war...then we'd actually be putting money into it!"

"Rob a bank, go to jail. Bank robs you, they get a bailout."

"Capitalism is an organized crime."

"Bombing for peace is like f***ing for virginity."

"My 87-year-old mother and her 4 housemates forced from their board & care home by foreclosure. Four caregivers lost their jobs."

Coincidentally, there were several posters stapled to trees in the park advertising an upcoming foreclosure auction, an irony noted by many in attendance.

"The economic crisis was an inside job."

"I'm here because you're not."
